A dialysis unit is used to remove some of component A from feed stream 1 (“raffinate”) into stream 2 (“permeate”), where the entering concentrations of A in each stream are cA1,0=0.5 g/mL and cA2,0=0.0 g/mL, and the volumetric flow rates of the raffinate and permeate streams are 10 mL/min and 20 mL/min. DA through the membrane is 0.6 cm2/min, the membrane thickness is 0.1 cm, and the membrane area is 10cm.
a) Write steady state balance equations for the concentration of A in volumes V1 and V2 (write 2 equations in terms of variables in the figure; no need to plug in numbers for this part).
b) What are the exiting concentrations of A in the raffinate and permeate streams (cA1 and cA2)?
