Chapter 1: The United States was an active interventionist in other countries and territories at the end of the nineteenth century, the heart of the Age of Imperialism (1870-1914). Where did these actions occur, how many were there, what interests and values of the government and business community did they reflect? One major event was the Spanish-American-Cuban War of 1898 the cause and consequences of which are very controversial. Two other highly significant incursions took place in Hawaii and the Philippines and contributed to the formation of the Anti-Imperials League. How might these ventures be compared to present day wars and interventions, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria?
