Hypothesis Testing Of Youth Spending More Time With Friends

A common finding in criminology is that youths who spend a lot of free time in the company of their friends and in the absence of adult supervision are more likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, and use marijuana. Researchers estimate that the average youth uses these substances at a rate of 0.75 per year. You collect data from a sample of 20 youths whose parents report that they spend an inordinate amount of time with their friends, and find the self-report substance use figures below. Using α = 0.05, test the hypothesis that these youths engage in more substance use than the average adolescent. Note that you must calculate the mean and standard deviation on your own.
