Given the Mole Balance for Acetic Acid and Sodium Bicarbonate Reaction
Question
The UND ChemECar team is trying out a new reaction this year:
CH3COOH + NaHCO3 → CH3COONa + H2O + CO2 (Acetic Acid + Sodium Bicarbonate → Sodium Acetate + Water + Carbon Dioxide)
The reaction is carried out in a small glass vessel with inlet and outlet connections on the top and a stir bar inside to keep everything mixed. Initially the reactor is filled with a concentrated aqueous solution of acetic acid. A dilute aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution is added to the reactor at a constant rate. Sodium acetate remains dissolved in the liquid mixture, while all the CO2 formed is gaseous and is vented out the top. Some water vapor also exits the reactor with the CO2. Write a mole balance for each of the compounds present in the reactor.
