Question
A double-pipe heat exchanger uses water to cool propylene glycol. Use the data in Table 1 to answer the following questions.
Table 1 – Physical properties of water and propylene glycol
|
Mass flow rate (lbm/hr) |
Heat capacity (Btu/lbm-°F) | Temperature (°F) entering |
Temperature (°F) Leaving | |
| Water | 5000 | 1.00 | 60 | - |
| Propylene glycol | 10,000 | 0.60 | 200 | 100 |
(a) If the double-pipe heat exchanger is operated in counter current flow, what is the required heat exchange area if the heat transfer coefficient is 200 Btu/hr-ft2-°F?
(b) The heat transfer coefficient is 50Btu/hr-ft2-°F on the side of the heat exchanger with the water inlet (side “1”) and is 350 Btu/hr-ft2-°F at the water outlet (side “2”). Assume the heat transfer coefficient varies linearly with water temperature and the following equation applies: Q = A (h1∆T2 – h2∆T1/In (h1∆T2/ h2∆T1)) where ΔT = TPG - TWater. Calculate the required heat exchanger area.
(c) What are the minimum mass flow rates of water required to reduce the temperature of propylene glycol from 200°F to 100°F (as indicated in Table 1) for counter- and co-current flows?
(d) If the double-pipe heat exchanger is instead operated in co-current flow, what is the required heat exchange area if the water flow rate is 15,500 lbm/hr and the heat transfer coefficient is 200 Btu/hr-ft2-°F? How do the water flow rate and area compare to your result from part (a)?
Summary
The question belongs to Chemical Engineering and the question is about using a double pipe heat exchanger for cooling down propylene glycol. Questions such as using double pipe heat exchanger to counter current flow, the required heat exchange are, the minimum mass flow rates of water required to reduce temperature from 200°F to 100°F, etc have been discussed with calculations in the solution .

I was unsure about a communicable disease case study assigned to me on my final year of nursing study. Then when I browsed through the net for help I landed on HwA and found that their experts are really well equipped with knowledge and expertise pertaining to the subject. I am really happy with the assistance I had received and I recommend this site for all nursing students.
Writing the final year dissertation paper was a big deal for me as it is the ultimate decider for my grades. Needless to say that I was very nervous but I got immense help from HwA throughout the tenure and helped me get a solid A at the end of everything.
The corporate strategy case study which I was handed over by my professor was a bit difficult and I was not certain that I would be able to meet the standards. So I looked online for help and eventually landed here in HwA. I was thrilled to see that the experts here are all well aware of my syllabus and they did a fantastic job in providing an excellent solution.
I was really struggling with the Networking engineering dissertation topic, my professor asked me to work on, in my last semester. Then I came across TheReliableTutor and they really have brilliant engineering dissertation and thesis writers. The experts have worked on my Engineering Questions since then and now I am in my 7th semester and still never got below grade A in any of my Electrical Engineering Assignments.
I always loved Chemistry but Chemical Engineering was something completely different. I took help from TheReliableTutor.com on several occasions and so far they have delivered the reports on time.

this is a very good website
I have 50 questions for the same test your page is showing only 28
hi can you please help or guide me to answer my assignments. thanks

This solution is perfect ...thanks
Hello Allison,I love the 2nd image that you did! I also, had never heard of SumoPaint, is something that I will have to exolpre a bit! I understand completely the 52 (or so) youtube videos that you probably watched. Sometimes they have what you want, sometimes they don't! However, it is always satisfying when you are able to produce something that you have taught yourself. Great job!Debra 0 likes
