You are given the following data taken in several runs in a mixed flow reactor:

ln(-rA) = -0.6931 when ln(CA) = 0

here -rA is the measured rate of disappearance of component A, and CA is the concentration of component A. The units of -rA are mol/(L s) and the units of CA are mol/L.

a) Write the rate equation for this reaction. (Hint: The rate equation expresses the rate of disappearance of component A as a function of the concentration of A.)

b) In a separate experiment, it is determined that the stoichiometry of the overall reaction is given by A ® R + S. The reaction is homogeneous. If pure, gaseous A is charged into an ideal batch reactor with an initial concentration of 5 mol/L, what is the time required for 80% conversion. Assume that the volume of the reacting mixture changes proportionately with conversion.

c) Now assume the same reaction is occurring at steady state in an ideal plug flow reactor. If the initial concentration in the plug flow is 5mol/L and the volumetric flow rate into the reactor is 10 L/s, what must the volume of the reaction be to achieve 80% conversion at the exit?
