Define the pipe friction coefficient f. Explain with reference to a log f- log Re graph, what is meant by laminar, smooth turbulent and fully rough turbulent flow in pipes.
Two pipes each 300 m long and of diameters 150 mm and 75 mm respectively, are joined in series. The difference of overall head between the ends is 30.5 m water and the rate of flow of water through the pipes is 5.4 dm3/s. Neglecting all losses other than pipe friction, determine the sheer stress at the wall of each portion of the pipe line. Assume f has the same value for each pipe.
