Calculate Fractional Recovery Of Hexane
Question
Oil is extracted from soybeans using liquid n-hexane as a solvent. The residue from the extraction unit contains 0.78kg hexane/kg of dry solids. The residue is contacted in a dryer with Nitrogen that has an inlet temperature of 85°C. The solids that leave the dryer unit contain 0.05kg of residual hexane/kg of dry solids. The gas leaves the dryer at 80°C & 1 atm with a relative saturation of 70%. The gas is then compressed to 5 atm in a condenser & cooled to 28°C. Some hexane is collected as condensate. Calculate fractional recovery of hexane in terms of kg condensed/kg fed in the wet solids.
