In 2007, data were collected from Mpumalanga Province on SMMEs that were owned by previously disadvantaged in a survey and the following table shows the dataset that was obtained. The aim of the study was to determine the factors affecting the poor performance of the enterprises.

Educ = Education in terms of no. of schooling
BusAge = Age of the business in terms of years
Exp = Work experience in terms of years
Employees = No. of employees or workers
ManthRev = Monthly Revenue in ‘000 Rands
Registered = whether the business is registered with government or not. If yes, registered = 1 otherwise, registered = 2
MonthCost = Monthly Cost in ‘000 Rands
Use the SPSS, to do the following or answer the following questions
- Prepare frequency tables and give descriptive statistics of the variables. Also, draw the corresponding histograms or bar diagrams.
- Are there any associations or correlations between background variables (i.e., gender, race, education, business age, experience, employees) and profit? Hint: Use the chi-square test or correlation analysis
- Fit a linear regression model of revenue on: (a) Education (b) Work Experience and (c) No. of Employees. Interpret your results in the context of the study. (Use Alpha = 0.05
- Repeat question three using profit as the dependent variable. This time, include the ANOVA table and interpret it as well
- Give recommendations as to how the performance of the SMMEs would be improved.
