In the data set, there are 35 variables and 2248 participants. The file is about Norwegian veterans, who have participated in international military operations (intops). The data contains information about PTS symptoms, how they perceived their time in active duty and to which degree they use avoidant coping mechanisms in facing tough situations. Tasks
- Give a descriptive description of the sample
- Investigate the factor structure of the variables intops_1 to intops_10, by using a principal component analysis. How many components are in this sample. Explain how you proceed, and give the components meaningful names.
- Combine, using the results from assignment 2, the variables intops1-intops10 to one or more sum and mean-scores. Construct new mean and sum scores for reak1-reak10 and mest1-mest10. Please show how you did this.
- Calculate and rapport reliability in all the new variables you made in assignment 3. Would you say this is satisfactory for this study?
- In the data, there is a variable called ‘tjeneste’, which tells us what kind of function or service that the participants had. Transform this variable into a dictome (two part) variable, that separates the ones with ‘operative tjeneste’ (operative service) from the rest.
Are there differences in the two kinds of service and PTS (reak1-10)? Are there differences in the two variables with any of the new components you made in assignment 2? - The variable ‘Varighet’ splits the data in three different groups, depending on the amount of time the participants spent in operative service, in the last three years. Are there any differences in PTS symptoms (Reak1-10) in the groups of ‘varighet’? Describe your result
- Check the bivariate correlations (coherence?) between reak1-10, mest1-10 and the variables you created in assignment 2, both by screen plot and correlations. Describe the pattern of coherence –both in regards to direction and strength.
- Specify a regression model that gives validation to say something about how much of the variations in the PTS (mest1-10) that mest1-10 can explain, that goes beyond what ‘tjeneste’ and ‘varighet’ can explain. Use the variable you created in assignment 5. Describe the results from the model you chose.
- Give a brief summary (200 - 300 words) of the main findings.
